For Cable MSOs, BroadWorks provides both commercial Unified Communications and Consumer Communications Service offerings in one common platform.

Consumer applications

BroadWorks provides a core set of residential services based on the PacketCable™ Residential SIP Telephony (RST) feature specification. This core set of services can be augmented with high value, differentiating services such as Simultaneous Ring, Sequential Ring, and BroadWorks Anywhere. Through BroadSoft Xtended, MSOs can offer their users new and innovative ways to integrate their phone experience with other services they use on the web.

Business applications

BroadWorks supports the core set of commercial services based on the PacketCable™ Business SIP Services (BSS) feature specification. This core set of services can be augmented with over one hundred business features including advanced services such as voice/video mail, meet-me conferencing, and call centers. Through the BroadSoft Xtended program, operators can tap into a rich ecosystem of third party ISVs that are extending BroadWorks to meet the specific communications needs of various vertical business markets.

VoIP cable architectures

PacketCable™ 1.5

In a PacketCable™ 1.5 network architecture, BroadWorks is an Application Server that acts as a call agent with a native NCS (link to http://www.cablelabs.com/specifications/PKT-SP-NCS1.5-I03-070412.pdf) interface, providing the complete set of line side services to Embedded Media Terminal Adapters (eMTAs). BroadWorks uses SIP to route calls to Media Gateway Controllers (MGC) or to Call Management Servers (CMS) in other administrative domains. View Diagram

PacketCable™ Multimedia (PCMM)

In a PCMM network architecture, BroadWorks is an Application Server with a native SIP interface to the Client terminal. All BroadWorks group and user services are available in this solution. BroadWorks sends all signaling through the Session Border Controller, which communicates with the Application Manager/Policy Server to provide dynamic quality of service control for multimedia session flows established over the HFC network. BroadWorks uses SIP to route calls to Media Gateway Controllers (MGC) for incoming and outgoing calls over the PSTN. Alternatively, BroadWorks uses SIP to route calls to other VoIP networks through a peering session border controller. BroadWorks can support both PCMM and PacketCable™ 1.5 simultaneously on the same platform – providing a solid migration path from an NCS based network to SIP PCMM. Because it uses the same Application Server components, the BroadWorks PCMM solution can be used as a first phase towards a PacketCable™ 2.0 IMS based network architecture. View Diagram

PacketCable™ 2.0

In a PacketCable™ 2.0 network architecture, which is based on the 3GPP IMS reference model, BroadWorks provides a standards based SIP Application Server (SIP AS) and Media Resource Function (MRF). This uses the same BroadWorks network elements and software employed in the PacketCable™ 1.5 and PCMM solutions, giving operators a solid upgrade path towards a PacketCable™ 2.0 network infrastructure. BroadWorks for PacketCable™ 2.0 provides a complete service offering for both residential and business applications. In this architecture BroadWorks integrates with the IMS core through the Isc interface to the CSCF. The Application Server can also be integrated to the HSS/SLF through the Sh/Dh reference points – providing the option to store service data centrally in the HSS or to collocate it with each Application Server cluster. For billing, BroadSoft a standard Rf reference point for post paid billing, as well as an Ro reference point for pre-paid billing applications. View Diagram
